Holman Headland & Abbeville Mortuaries, Inc

Our Story

The Holman family is a pioneering Wiregrass family having come into Dale County, Alabama in 1855. Wilton Russell Holman, Sr. (1913-1992) was a 1934 graduate of Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He worked for four years with funeral businesses in Ozark, Hartford and Abbeville. He met Syble Duggan Holman (1913-1988) from Red Level, Alabama at the Frasier-Ellis Hospital School of Nursing in Dothan, where she was trained as a Registered Nurse. Holman-Headland Mortuary was established in Headland in 1938 by Wilton and Syble Holman. Syble Holman was instrumental in establishing the mortuary along side of her husband. The mortuary offered 24 hour ambulance service in addition to funeral service. In 1947, the mortuary moved to its current location on South Main Street.

This was the first newly constructed facility built for the specific use as a mortuary in Southeast Alabama. In 1969, the Holman Family expanded their business by establishing the present Holman-Abbeville Mortuary in Abbeville, Alabama. Holman-Headland & Abbeville Mortuaries incorporated in 1970 to include their three sons, Wilton Russell Holman, Jr., Norman Duggan Holman, Sr. (1943 -2017) and John Robert Holman. The boys grew up in the funeral home and are continuing the legacy of their parents by operating the Holman Mortuaries in Headland and Abbeville.
